Hypnosis Explained

Hypnotherapy is a personalised, tailored, proven and very effective solution to a range of issues. It can assist in addressing smoking, nail-biting, overeating, anxiety, fear of flying or fear of public speaking, phobias, insomnia, self esteem and confidence, study and examination nerves, memory recall and retention, negative thinking, low mood, stress and tension as well as a range of other anxiety related conditions.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness. What this means is that, when induced into a hypnotic trance, you are not asleep. You are aware of what is happening and what is being said but you are very relaxed and the subconscious mind is open and receptive to positive and safe suggestions that You want, and they can have a very beneficial effect.

What Is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is exactly what the name suggests - therapy while in hypnosis. Therapeutic suggestions are given to the subconscious mind after hypnosis has been induced. Unlike many other types of therapy there is no need to relive or delve into past painful experiences or try to uncover what 'caused' the issue that is being addressed - the subconscious mind knows what the cause is and during hypnotherapy any emotional attachment resulting from that cause is reframed and/or reshaped. Consequently, hypnotherapy tends to be less invasive and is a very comfortable way to change.

Are there any side-effects?

Hypnosis is completely natural and there is only one known side-effect and that is a feeling of total relaxation - which is very welcome!

A person with a mental disorder must discuss with their doctor whether hypnosis would be helpful or appropriate for them. The Physician would contact the Hypnotherapist.

I had a friend who tried to stop smoking using hypnosis - it didn't work. Why not?

It is possible that people who go to a hypnosis session for reasons other than their own strong desire to quit have found it ineffective. They may be coming because of pressure from family or friends or health reasons. They may not have been ready to quit, even though they may have felt like quitting. There is a difference. Another reason may be that the person did not expenience what they needed to, through an induction that suits their personality, their motivations and desired outcomes.

Being trained through the Australian Academy of Hypnosis, we have extensive training in deep trance induction. Our sessions are tailored to the individual making them more effective.

We have a very high success rate with people who come for hypnosis to quit smoking. This is because we do our best to 'screen' people on the phone, to see if they are coming for their OWN reasons, not because of pictures on the packet or pressure from family or friends. We ask a series of questions to gauge whether they are ready and really want to quit. For this issue we require the person come for three sessions. Many, many years ago we did the one-off, once a week sessions and found that after a six month call-back some people had 'fallen off the wagon'. However since modifying the duration and number of sessions we have a 90% plus success rate and most of our work comes from referrals.

I've been to stage hypnosis shows where people do and say embarrassing and silly things. Will I be doing anything like that when I am hypnotised?

Absolutely not! When in hypnosis you will experience total relaxation and you have our unconditional, positive regard and respect. You will be in control at all times, in fact, if you wanted to you could open your eyes and come alert at any time.

Hypnosis is a pleasant and sometimes unusual experience and some people wonder to themselves whether or not they really are hypnotised OR if they were deep enough for it to be effective. There is no need to concern your self here... experienced hypnotherapists know the signs and indications of a person in trance.

Some people feel as though being in the Hypnosis trance was like daydreaming or drifting off to some daydream place. You will hear my voice but you may or may not remember everything that is said.

Will I say things or reveal secrets under Hypnosis?

No. Before being hypnotised you will be asked for some general information around the issue being addressed and we will discuss what you want to achieve from the hypnosis. After that most of the talking is done by the hypnotherapist.

How is Stage Hypnosis different to Hypnotherapy?

Stage Hypnosis is completely different to Hypnosis for therapeutic change. Stage Hypnotists are employed to put on an entertaining and dramatic show. It is a special skill and line of work. You won't see anyone get up on the stage who is an introvert!! They are up there because they are willing to have a bit of fun. However not everyone is selected and if you have been to a stage Hypnosis show you would have noticed at the start of the show the hypnotist conducted some tests with people and would have sent some back and left only a few on stage. The Hypnotist identifies those people who will quickly go into the level of trance needed to perform what is planned, selecting those people who are natural extroverts ready to enjoy themselves. This is not the same as in hypnotherapy. The stage hypnotist is seeking people who fill a certain profile - and they need to be people who go into trance very quickly. Everyone who is sent back to the audience could be hypnotised if they wanted to be - however they may require an individualised and quite different induction to achieve a level of trance.

How effective is Hypnotherapy?

Research has found success rates of 90% and higher for professionally conducted hypnosis/hypnotherapy.

How much does Hypnosis cost?
